ABOUT ME

Architectural Designer
Hello, my name is Derrick Smith, and I am a fifth-year architecture student at Pennsylvania State University. I'm looking forward to becoming a licensed architect and entering the working world. Many factors have influenced my interest in architecture, including visits to historic houses and buildings in Philadelphia and a high school internship with an architecture firm that sparked my interest. From there, I began to research other countries' architectural styles and architectural monuments in order to broaden my perspective on architecture and begin to shape my mind to be more analytical.
As a Penn State architecture student, I've learned about design, the thought and intent that goes into every building around the world, and how to apply my ideas to create a one-of-a-kind building behind a concept. Penn State also provided me with the opportunity to travel to Europe, where I stayed in Rome, Italy, but also visited other cities. My time in Europe altered my perspective on the world and the world of design. Being able to personally see and feel the impact of spaces and architecture, as well as how each city's and country's culture influences how these places are used and valued.
Aside from architecture, I have many other interests, including photography and history. Photography allows me to capture and share moments in the world as I see them. And I've developed an interest in history because it's always fascinating to see how certain cultures evolved and what actions and decisions influenced the overall world.
